Chance Redux

T. Renner, "Self-Portrait: Ink Blot #'s 1-7", 2008, acrylic on paper, 5" x 7".

The above paintings were on display at Subterranean Books during February and March of this year as part of an show called "Works on Paper (Chance)." I'm re-posting them because I couldn't help but think how well they would have fit in with the current "Chance Aesthetics" exhibition at the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum at Washington University.

Installation view photograph by John Montre.

an artist statement from the man:

Ever since Eugene Atget's amazing documentary of Paris, photography has dealt with the sense of place. Walker Evans elevated this to a sublime level based on Atget's images.

Every spring for the past seven years, we have walked around Berlin with our UTSA photography students. In the spring of 2008, we chose to pass a single camera back and forth. The idea of Berlin as a distinctive, unique space pervades these images: a taste, a feeling on the skin, or a moment of being lost in a big city.

Berlin is a cultural center and the preponderance of major art pieces is lurking behind many of these photographs.

It's an engaging thought to wander the city's streets and share a camera, a strip of film, and a photographic process.
